What Makes a Reader?

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Reading is one of the most important skills that is taught in Primary School. Such is its importance, we invest quality time with staff training them on the latest ideas and tracking students to ensure they are all progressing as well as can be expected. Can you imagine a world without being able to read? That’s the way it was a few hundred years ago for the majority of people in our communities and in history it is recorded that Luther pressed the importance of schools so that people could learn to read and therefore have access to the Bible.  ...Read More

Is Your House a Home?

Thursday, March 16, 2017

Many of you would be aware that my husband and I are in the process of relocating to the peninsula from the Gold Coast. Selling up our family home with so many memories and packing up from 11 years of living is providing physical and emotional challenges for our family. What do we do with that medal our daughter won in year 2 at the athletics carnival which seemed so important at the time but now she is 21 is seen as something to throw out by me and a treasure to her that I must store! The process of looking at so many houses where it is quite clear that some places are houses which were built and prepared for sale purely on their monetary value and others are places where families gather and live life together. Photos on the wall, little ‘treasures’ on display and rooms which have furniture obviously placed so there are interactions, give that sense of warmth a true home has. This process has also made me reflect – have our parents at Grace ever thought about the difference between a house and a home?  ...Read More

Education Revolution

Some of you may have seen the ‘60 Minutes’ discussion in relation to Australian schools and how student stress is impacting on learning. Also the Australian newspaper at the weekend had an article on the education revolution which is occurring in schools. In the Lutheran Sector, as Heads of Schools, we are being challenged to rethink our practices so that we do reflect a changing society and so that our education system is not reflective of an outdated methodology created for a society of 200 years ago.  ...Read More

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

As educators we are constantly aware that we work every day with young people who will one day be the future leaders, creators, innovators, investigators, collaborators, communicators, facilitators, problem solvers and contributors of this world. Over the weekend I had cause to again be reminded of the importance of teachers in the life of a child to inspire and encourage them to believe they can achieve.  ...Read More

“Be thankful for small mercies.” This is one of those sayings that we hear when others try to realign our thinking over something that hasn’t gone our way. It is a way of looking at what is unsavoury in our experience and encourages us to see that we have more in our lives that is good and so shouldn’t dwell on the negatives.  ...Read More
